What are the effects HIV stigma?

People with HIV can become subject to gossip, rejection or even violence when their HIV status becomes known.

Recent research carried out by the Testing Barriers Project shows that HIV stigma and discrimination exist within the gay scene as well as in wider society.

Some gay men may prefer not to know their HIV status to avoid this stigma and possible discrimination and may therefore be denied the advantages of early diagnosis and access to HIV treatments.
