Pick a word any word

Okay, here’s a wee game for all you gay homosexualists out there. First, empty your mind (that’s the easy bit) and then think of one word - the word that describes you. It sums up who you are, what you’re all about, is a constant in your life and, as much as one word can, defines you.

There’s a chance, for easiness of definition, the word was ‘gay’, but that’s ‘cause I just put you in a tiny pigeon-holed box - forcing a choice. It’d be a rare heterosexual guy who chose ‘straight’ as a defining word (exception being the ‘uncomfortable straight in gay bar’ scenario - “nah, ‘am straight pal - ye hear me? STRAIGHT!”). I guess we’re made to think a hell of a lot about being gay - right from early feelings of being different.

So, have I got a point? Well, it’d be cool to be part of a society that didn’t make us think so damn hard about being different - a lot of the time, in a bad way. A long overdue change, that could have positive repercussions through society and time, is civil partnership rights. Mmmmm, let me think of a word. Just one. Oh yeah - equality.

Core is a partnership project representing the LGBT community in Scotland. Views expressed are not necessarily those of the partners. However, if they're witty, intelligent and insightful - they probably are. If you flicked through this mag, saw a photie and made an assumption about someone's sexuality - then you're about ten years behind what we're trying to do here. Click the mag off and walk away. Accurate at going online time, but hey, we didn't get this sarky without making mistakes.
