Is my result confidential?

If you have your HIV test at a GUM Clinic the privacy of your notes is protected by law but if you have concerns about giving your name, you can give a false one.

Information is not given to anyone outside the clinic without your signed consent. Therefore, if you test HIV antibody positive, it is your choice whom you inform.

There is no way your family or doctor can find out anything unless you tell them.

You should note that the law protecting GUM clinic notes does not apply to GPs and you may wish to take this into account when considering where to have your test.

If your test result is positive, it is normally recommended that you tell your GP to avoid possible misdiagnosis in your future health care.
