WELCOME TO GAY MEN’S HEALTH

WITHOUT

CONDOMS

Condoms, when used properly, are the most effective way to prevent infecting someone or being infected with HIV. However, many gay men fuck without a condom at some point in their lives.

The more times you fuck without using a condom, and the more men you fuck with, the greater the chances you will infect someone with HIV or that he'll infect you. If you do fuck without a condom, there are still ways you can reduce the chance of HIV being spread.

Withdrawing

If you do not use a condom for fucking the risk of HIV being transmitted is less if you pull out before you cum. Although withdrawing before you cum is safer, it is still a high risk as precum may contain HIV.

Some men choose to withdraw before they cum even when they use condoms in case of condom failure.

Fucking vs. Being Fucked

Gay men are more likely to catch HIV from being fucked (being bottom) than from fucking (being top).

Men who do not have HIV have less chance of becoming infected if they do the fucking (are top).

However, the risks are considered high either way.

Fisting and using dildos prior to fucking can increase the chance of damaging the lining of the arse and therefore may increase the possibility of HIV transmission.

I Don’t Use Condoms Because I’m in a Steady Relationship

Guys often make a decision to stop using condoms because they are in a steady relationship with one person, and both guys believe themselves to have the same HIV status.

This can be problematic if both guys are HIV positive, because it is possible to pick up another infection such as Hepatitis C. Having both HIV and Hepatitis C at the same time can cause complicated health problems. It is a good idea to both get sexual health checks at the same time and make sure neither of you have any other viruses or infections.

If both guys are HIV negative, and neither come to be positive through other routes (for example, by having unprotected sex outside of the relationship) then the bottom line is that they will not catch HIV from each other. However, the decision for two negative guys can also be problematic.

A decision of this sort is usually made on a basis of trust; for example that neither will have any kind of sex outside the relationship, or that fucking and being fucked without condoms is not allowed when with other guys.

The problem comes about when one guy does the unthinkable and breaks the rule that both have agreed and both are trusting the other on. If you or your partner does have sex outside the relationship, how easy would it be to “confess” to the other? What would the consequences of this confession be in terms of your relationship?

A lot of guys in this situation find it too hard to tell their partner that they have “been unfaithful” and put themselves at risk. As a result, nothing changes and both partners continue to fuck without condoms.

The most common route of HIV transmission amongst gay and bi guys in Scotland is through unprotected sex within steady relationships.
