Lothian


There are four main options for gay and bisexual men living in Lothian. These are:

  1. 1)The Tuesday evening clinic (5:30-7:30pm) at the Gay Men’s Health basement, 10a Union Street, Edinburgh. HIV and syphilis results within 30 minutes, chlamydia and gonorrhoea results within two weeks.

  2. 2)The regular GUM clinic at Lauriston Place in Edinburgh

  3. 3)An out-of-hours gay and bisexual men’s GUM clinic at Lauriston Place in Edinburgh

  4. 4)A gay and bisexual men’s clinic on a Monday evening at Spittal Street in Edinburgh

  5. 5)A GUM clinic in Livingston, West Lothian.



Option One

Tuesday Evening Out of Hours Clinic at Gay Men’s Health (In partnership with ROAM)

The clinic runs weekly on a Tuesday evening between 5:30pm - 7:30pm at the GMH office at 10 Union Street, Edinburgh (please use the basement entrance, marked 10a ). It's s a drop-in clinic so no appointment is required.


The clinic offers finger-prick testing for HIV and Syphilis, and a combination of urine sample and self administered throat and rectal swabs for Chlamydia and Gonorrhoea. We can give results for HIV and Syphilis testing within 30 minutes, and within two weeks for Chlamydia and Gonorrhoea (by telephone).

You may have to arrange an appointment up to 4 weeks in advance but there is a walk-in clinic, where no appointment is necessary, from 9.00am until 10.00am, Monday to Friday.


As well as HIV tests, GUM provides sexual health check-ups and treatments. All results are totally confidential. A full check-up normally involves a swab from the penis, a urine sample and a blood test. You may also have a rectal and throat swab taken.


Option Three

Wednesday Evening Out of Hours Gay and Bisexual Men's Clinic

This is a special out-of hours clinic, especially for gay and bisexual men. This runs every Wednesday evening. It is held at the same location as the regular GUM clinic, see address details above.

Service for men who have sex with men. Roam Outreach offers HIV, Syphilis and Hep C testing, as well as Hep B vaccinations.

  1. This clinic runs twice a week and is situated in Howden Health Centre at St John's Hospital, Livingston . It sees people both with and without an

  2. appointment.

  3. Clinic times are Monday 6 – 8 pm and Friday 1.30 – 3.30 pm

  4. Walk in mainly - please attend at the beginning of the clinic (people without appointments are seen on a first come first in, first seen basis - people that cannot be seen that day are triaged and urgent cases are seen.)

  5. Appointments can also be given (e.g. for repeat screening, vaccinations) and these are usually held in the last part of the clinic.

  6. You do not have to be referred by your doctor – you can arrange an appointment yourself



Greater Glasgow & Clyde
