SCOTLAND’S CHARITY FOR GAY MEN

WELCOME TO GAY MEN’S HEALTH

The most common way that HIV is passed on between gay men is though fucking or being fucked without a condom, or when using a condom that bursts or comes off during sex. There is a much smaller risk that HIV may be passed on through sucking.

There is more information about condom use here on the Gay Men’s Health website.

If you think you have been at risk of being infected with HIV through unsafe sex, it is important that you know what to do.

WHAT IS PEP?

PEP stands for Post Exposure Prophylaxis and is a course of pills that may stop you becoming infected with HIV after you've been exposed to the virus.

IT'S ALL ABOUT TIMING

PEP is most effective taken as soon as possible after exposure to HIV. The deadline to start the course of treatment is 72 hours, however it's best to begin within a few hours to give PEP the best chance of working.

HOW LONG IS THE COURSE?

If you are prescribed PEP the course of pills will last four weeks. It’s important not to miss any doses and take the pills at the times you are told to take them.
