WELCOME TO GAY MEN’S HEALTH

SCOTLAND’S CHARITY FOR GAY MEN

INTERNET

Who had a clue that gaydar.co.uk, outeverywhere.com, fitlads.net et al would become such a massive thing?  All you need is access to a computer, usually an account with the provider – some you pay for some you don’t (but the free ones usually have less functionality) and on you go.

The sites themselves have become more sophisticated and have more and more features all the time.  Each site or service is different and rules apply.  Some are more about making friends, others more about getting sex.

Try them out see which one suits you.  Internet sex, using something like Gaydar is no different really than meeting people in other ways.  Many of the same rules apply about personal safety etc.  These sights usually have information on safe Internet dating.  So look it up.

Like anything there are things that all of us who use such services can do to make the whole experience better.

Be honest in your profile; don’t say you are 6’5 when you are really 5’8.  They are going to notice when they meet you!  If you are looking for a boyfriend, and the guy you are chatting to isn’t; be realistic.  Good tip – read their profile!  It may save you wasted time. Good manners make the man.

If someone indicates that they like you then at least have the good grace to message them back - even if you are not interested.  Gaydar for example even has an automatic response for such situations, avoiding any embarrassment.

Look out for our internet outreach volunteers in the Scottish chat rooms as part of the Scottish Netreach Network (SNN) project - they’re always happy to hear from someone looking for a chat.
