GAY MEN’S HEALTH

BOARD MEMBERS

Gay Men’s Health is a charity which aims to promote the better health and wellbeing of all gay and bisexual men in Scotland. We are actively working to challenge stigma and discrimination faced by gay and bisexual men living with HIV.


We are seeking to recruit new board members who will help to provide

strategic vision and governance for the organisation. We are particularly keen in attracting board members who have experience of either HR, Finance, Strategic Planning or Counselling, to further enhance our existing board.


This is a superb opportunity for career development and to contribute to the future development of a dynamic, forward thinking, gay men’s charity. Being involved in and influencing the strategic direction of HIV and STI prevention work for gay men across Scotland, whilst also shaping support services for gay men living with HIV. This is a voluntary post, travel expenses will be reimbursed.

Task Description: Member of the Board of Directors


AIM


To ensure that Gay Men’s Health operates in an effective, responsible and accountable manner whilst maintaining responsibility for the governance and strategy of the charity.


TASKS


  1. To regularly attend board meetings, contribute positively to these meetings.

  2. To safeguard and promote the values and mission of Gay Men’s Health.

  3. Determine the strategy and structure of Gay Men’s Health.

  4. Line management of staff if and when appropriate.

  5. To ensure that Gay Men’s Health works within its policies, guidance, budget and the law.

  6. To ensure that the committee is representative and functions effectively.


COMPLEXITY


The role of board member is one of responsibility and trust and also of legal liability should anything go wrong. Gay Men’s Health is a company limited by guarantee, and as a Director your details will be held at Companies House.


OUTCOME


To ensure that Gay Men’s Health provide services that are effective, responsible and accountable and work towards our mission statement.


TRAINING/ SUPPORT


  1. Induction training for newly appointed board members in roles and responsibilities of board members for those who request it.

  2. Peer support from other board members, staff and volunteers.


REPORTING


Direct to the board meeting, which meets quarterly.



TIME COMMITMENT


Attendance at quarterly meetings and occasional membership of

sub-groups and working parties as required. (1 – 2 hours per week maximum). Attendance at Annual General Meeting.

At March 2008 we are particularly keen to recruit those people who possess human resources, strategic planning, counselling or financial skills.
