WELCOME TO GAY MEN’S HEALTH

SCOTLAND’S CHARITY FOR GAY MEN

SHOULD

I TEST?

One in 25 gay and bisexual men in Scotland has HIV but over 40% of those men don’t know they have it.

The first thing to consider when thinking about having an HIV test is whether you have been at risk of catching HIV either recently or in the past.

For most gay and bisexual men the highest risk of getting HIV is through fucking or being fucked without a condom. There’s a much smaller risk that you will get HIV through sucking without a condom (although infections like syphilis, gonorrhoea and herpes can easily be passed on through sucking).

Other less common ways that HIV is passed on are through vaginal sex without a condom or by sharing a needle with someone who has HIV (eg when injecting drugs).

HIV is not passed on by kissing, sharing towels or insect bites.

If you think you’ve  been at risk the only way to know whether you have HIV is to have a test.

If you’ve already had an HIV test which gave a negative result but you have been at risk since then, you should go for another test.
